About the Role
The Environmental Health Officer plays a key role in protecting and promoting public health and environmental outcomes within our community. Reporting to the Team Leader Environmental Health, you will deliver regulatory, advisory, and enforcement services across a broad range of environmental health areas, including food safety, public health, contaminated land, on-site sewage management, land use conflicts and development-related matters.
This role involves inspections, investigations, assessments, and stakeholder engagement to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies. The position is offered as a dual‑graded role, providing an excellent opportunity for early‑career professionals to develop, as well as experienced Environmental Health Officers seeking their next step within local government. This is a fixed term role, offered from 26 June 2026 to 27 April 2027.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in environmental health, environmental science, public health, or a related discipline, or near completion of such qualifications
- Knowledge and understanding of environmental health legislation, standards, and guidelines
- Experience, or the demonstrated capability to undertake, inspections, investigations, and assessments related to environmental health activities
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks in a regulatory environment
- Well‑developed communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on customer service and community outcomes
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment

Key Responsibilities
- Conducting inspections and investigations across a range of environmental health functions, including food safety, public health, on‑site sewage management, noise, stormwater, and environmental management
- Assessing environmental health components of development and other applications and providing professional recommendations
- Providing timely, accurate advice to internal and external stakeholders on environmental health matters
- Investigating environmental health complaints and, where appropriate, recommending and undertaking enforcement action
- Preparing clear, accurate reports and documentation, including court‑related material when required
- Contributing to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and management plans related to environmental health
- Promoting effective community engagement and education in relation to environmental health issues

We offer:
- A fixed term, full-time position (35 hours per week), from 26 June 2026 to 27 April 2027
- Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with an appointment at a salary Grade 8: $70,450 to $81,626 per annum, or Grade 9: $84,310 to $97,686 per annum (dependent upon skills and experience)

Location: This position is based at Mullumbimby, however Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
