Join Byron Shire Council and help shape how one of Australia’s most iconic coastal communities moves and connects.

As our Traffic & Transport Engineer, you’ll lead real-world projects that improve road safety, active transport and parking across a fast-growing region—while enjoying a coastal lifestyle and flexible working. We encourage applications from Traffic & Transport Engineers at different career stages, including those looking to step up into a more senior or broader role. We are also open to considering candidates for relocation.

About the role

We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Traffic & Transport Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services team. In this key role, you will deliver expert engineering advice and lead the planning, design and implementation of traffic, transport and parking networks across the Byron Shire.

You will play a central role in shaping how people move through our community—developing strategies that improve safety, accessibility and efficiency for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. The role also provides coordination and technical support to the Local Traffic Forum, ensuring compliance with TfNSW guidelines and supporting informed, community-focused decision-making. If this role sounds of interest to you, don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, we would love to hear from you.

Why you’ll love working here

  • Work on visible, community-shaping transport projects
  • Balance city-level engineering challenges with coastal lifestyle

  • Supportive, collaborative team—not siloed
  • Real influence on decisions (not just design work)
  • Career development and exposure across planning, delivery and strategy

  • Lead traffic, transport and parking strategies across the Shire
  • Deliver practical solutions to improve safety, flow and accessibility
  • Provide expert advice to Council, stakeholders and the community
  • Coordinate Local Traffic Forum and implement outcomes
  • Manage projects from planning through to delivery
  • Analyse traffic and safety data to inform decisions
  • Work with TfNSW, consultants and community stakeholders

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Traffic Engineering (or a related engineering discipline)
  • Demonstrated experience in traffic engineering, transport planning, road safety and parking management.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant standards (Austroads, TfNSW and the Roads Act)
  • Proven ability to analyse data and deliver practical solutions
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

Nice to have (but not essential):

  • Experience in Road Safety Audits, traffic investigations and data analysis.
  • Experience with Local Traffic Forums or government processes
  • Parking systems or transport modelling experience
