Flood & Drainage Engineer

About the role

Join our team and play a critical role in shaping the resilience of our community. As a Flood & Drainage Engineer, you will deliver high-level engineering expertise across the design, construction, operation and maintenance of drainage infrastructure.

You’ll play a key support role in floodplain management initiatives—helping to protect our region from flood risk through data-driven planning, infrastructure delivery and community engagement. This is an opportunity to work on meaningful projects that directly contribute to public safety, environmental sustainability and long-term infrastructure planning.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide expert technical advice on drainage design, capacity, construction and maintenance.
  • Plan and deliver urban and rural drainage maintenance and capital renewal programs, including preparing business cases and budgets.
  • Develop and implement flood studies, floodplain management plans and strategies in line with NSW Floodplain Development Manual.
  • Coordinate the operation and maintenance of the Flood Warning Network and Disaster Dashboard.
  • Analyse flood behaviour, climate impacts and catchment risks to inform future planning.
  • Support drainage and flood-related infrastructure projects from concept through to completion.
  • Prepare specifications, tenders and contract documentation, and evaluate submissions.
  • Liaise with internal teams, government agencies, contractors, and the community on drainage and flood matters.
  • Support emergency management activities before, during and after flood events.
  • Promote community awareness and education around flood risk and mitigation.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, safety standards and environmental requirements.
  • Respond to customer enquiries, investigate issues and provide practical engineering solutions.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering and eligibility for membership with Engineers Australia.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a similar Flood and Drainage Engineering role, with demonstrated knowledge and expertise across both flood management and drainage engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in hydraulics, hydrology, drainage infrastructure design and floodplain management.
  • Strong experience in project planning, budgeting, cost control and delivery of engineering projects.
  • Sound knowledge of flood hazards, mitigation strategies and relevant legislation (including Local Government and WHS requirements).
  • Experience working within, or alongside, local government or similar regulatory environments (desirable).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders, community groups and technical teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver outcomes within deadlines.
  • Customer-focused mindset and a commitment to high-quality service delivery.
  • Competence in relevant engineering and modelling software (desirable).
  • Current Class C Driver Licence and Construction Induction Card.

We offer:

  • A permanent, full-time position (35 hours per week)
  • Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with appointment at Band 11, in the range of $104,564 to $121,153 (dependent upon skills and experience)
  • 3.5% Civil Liability Allowance (CLA), where eligible
  • 12% Superannuation

Location: This position is based at Mullumbimby; however, Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
