About the opportunity

The Sewer Maintenance Supervisor oversees and coordinates the maintenance and repair activities of the sewer system within the Utilities branch. This role involves leading a team, scheduling work assignments, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and managing equipment and material resources effectively. Team composition and direct reports may vary depending on operational requirements.

 

The Sewer Maintenance Supervisor plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and functionality of the sewer infrastructure to support public health and environmental preservation efforts.

 This role is dual graded depending on your skills and qualifications; without a trade is considered a Grade 4 and with a trade is a Grade 6 in our salary structure. 

Your role will involve:

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate sewer maintenance activities, including inspections, cleaning and repairs to ensure the integrity and functionality of the sewer system.
  • Ensure that daily work activities are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner, meeting established deadlines and service level agreements.
  • Conduct regular assessments of sewer systems to identify issues, prioritise maintenance needs, and develop action plans to address critical areas.
  • Oversee the use of specialised equipment and tools for sewer maintenance tasks, ensuring proper operation, maintenance, and safety protocols are followed.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and permit requirements governing sewer maintenance operations to mitigate risks and maintain environmental and public health standards.
  • Utilise Utilities asset management and planned maintenance software to maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs for regulatory reporting purposes, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Execute maintenance projects, including installation, modification, and repair work on various sewer system components, such as gravity sewer, vacuum sewer, low-pressure sewer, and rising mains. Supervise overflow spill clean-up, environmental sampling and other general operational and maintenance activities as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of planned maintenance schedules and recommend improvements to optimise the reliability and efficiency of sewer infrastructure.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in technical skills such as accurately reading and interpreting plans, technical drawings, and specifications, as well as operating computers/tablets for data entry, asset management, financial management, reporting, or communication purposes.
  • Budget management and compliance in line with financial delegations

What you bring to this role:

Grade 4

  • Year 12 Certificate.
  • Certificate III in Water Industry Operations or similar, or equivalent experience in a comparable role.
  • Class C Driver's Licence.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • Immunisation certification appropriate to the nature of works to be undertaken.
  • Proven success in sewer maintenance or similar role.
  • Leadership and coordination of small to medium-sized teams.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance industries.
  • Experience operating minor/major plant equipment.

Grade 6

All of the above and:

  • Trade Qualification Plumber and Drainer with a min of 2 years post-trade experience (4+ years preferred) or equivalent.
  • Managing budgets and delegations.
  • Development of and/or contribution to works programming.
  • Performance management of team and team development, e.g. training, skills development, performance reviews.
  • Coordination and liaison with internal stakeholders, contractors, and external agencies.

We are offering

  • Full time permanent position (38 hours per week / 9 day fortnight)
  • Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with an appointment at a salary in the range of:
    • Grade 4: $1,237.66 - $1,434.02 + 3% Market Loading
    • Grade 6:  $1,403.59 - 1,626.28 + 7% Market Loading
    • Per 38 hour week (dependent upon skills and experience)

Location: This position is based at our Depot and (STP) Sewerage Treatment Plant in Byron Bay; however, Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
