We have an exciting opportunity available for a person who likes puzzles and understanding how things work to join our team as an Apprentice Maintenance Fitter working within our Utilities branch. Apprenticeships combine work-based training with an employer and formal training from a training provider. They're a great way to be paid while you work, learn and complete your Cert III Mechanical Fitting!
Throughout your up to 4-year apprenticeship you will learn about the provision, operation and maintenance of water treatment, storage reservoirs and pipelines. The operation and maintenance of landfill and urban stormwater. Council's buildings, public toilets including swimming pools, sewerage treatment plants; pump stations and sewerage reticulation pipelines throughout the Shire.
This full-time apprenticeship opportunity combines practical experience with structured training, setting you up for a rewarding trade career in maintenance and mechanical fitting. Byron Shire Council is recruiting for an Apprentice who is ready to start after July 2025.

What we require from you to be successful:
- Literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Year 10
- Communication skills including completing standard forms and reporting documentation, interpreting operating manuals and providing and obtaining information.
- A genuine interest in this trade and a demonstrated mechanical aptitude
- The motivation and commitment to complete this apprenticeship.
- Time management skills.
- Interpersonal skills both in writing and verbally.
- To be able to work independently and contribute positively to a team environment.
- Be flexible in your approach to work and adapt well to workplace change.
- Confident using and experience with information technology.
We offer:
- Full-time, term employment for the duration of your apprenticeship - up to 4 years (38 hours per week/9 day fortnight).

Fresh Start for Local Government Apprentices, Trainees and Cadet Grant Guidelines Local Government (State) Award 2023 with an appointment at a salary in the range of $482 to $947.70 per 38-hour week (dependent upon age and level of schooling attained).

Location: This position is based at Byron Depot and STP (Sewerage Treatment Plant), however Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
