Apprentice Electrician

An Electrician’s role involves assisting with the identification, location and repair of faults over the range of electrical installations operated by Council. Does this spark your interest? We have an exciting opportunity available for a person who likes working outdoors and is not afraid of a challenge to join our team as an Apprentice Electrician working within our Utilities branch.  This is your opportunity to get paid while you learn and grow with us while obtaining your trade qualification, Cert III Electrotechnology Electrician.

Throughout your 4-year apprenticeship you will learn how to assist with routine servicing and understand Council's preventative maintenance systems and accurately record work details. Assist with the installation, maintenance, modification, testing and calibrating of Council's electrical equipment and infrastructures including:

  • Process control systems
  • Telemetry systems,
  • Radio communication systems,
  • Instrumentation and monitoring systems,
  • SCADA systems.
  • Carry out and document Control Measures for Electrical Work and associated risk assessments.
  • Pumping Systems + Electric Motors

Contribute toward the achievement of team goals by accepting responsibility for own work and participating in a positive and ethical manner. Undertake any tasks required in the case of natural disaster (flood, fire, cyclone, etc.) or major breakdown, under supervision. You will also assist with other Utilities operational tasks that are within your skill level as required and directed.

This full-time apprenticeship opportunity combines practical experience with structured training, setting you up for a rewarding career as an Electrician. Byron Shire Council is recruiting for an Apprentice who is ready to start after July 2025.

What we require from you to be successful: 

  • Literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to completion of Year 10
  • Communication skills including completing standard forms and reporting documentation, interpreting operating manuals and providing and obtaining information.
  • To be switched on and have a genuine interest in this trade 
  • The motivation and commitment to complete this apprenticeship.
  • Time management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills both in writing and verbally.
  • To be able to work independently and contribute positively to a team environment.
  • Be flexible in your approach to work and adapt well to workplace change.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, with experience in the MS Office suite of software (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint).

  • Full-time, term employment for the duration of your traineeship - up to 4 years (38 hours per week/9 day fortnight).

Location: This position is based at Byron Depot and STP (Sewerage Treatment Plant), however Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.

  • Background Screening: Background checks verify the information you have provided in your application, and where applicable, also check for relevant criminal history.
