Byron Shire Council is currently seeking a Full-time GIS Administrator, who will be responsible for managing, enhancing and maintaining Council’s Geographic Information System (GIS) to ensure accurate, accessible, and high‑quality spatial data and mapping services for internal staff and the community.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Maintain and administer Council’s spatial data assets and GIS databases, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, accessibility and compliance with corporate, industry and open data standards for internal users and the community.
- Design, implement and continuously improve a scalable, service-first GIS architecture, ensuring GIS performance is addressed at the map service and data layer, rather than relying solely on web application frameworks.
- Manage and support internal and public-facing web mapping applications, ensuring performance, usability, reliability and scalability, with applications operating as a thin presentation layer supported by optimised GIS services.
- Administer GIS platforms, software, servers and spatial databases (including Esri ArcGIS and spatial database technologies), managing upgrades, patches, integrations and enhancements in collaboration with IT teams and external vendors, while maintaining awareness of emerging and complementary GIS tools.
- Lead the optimisation of GIS services, including layer rationalisation, scale-dependent rendering, cached services, vector tiles and data aggregation, to support large and complex GIS environments.
- Provide technical support and training to GIS users, resolving issues through the helpdesk and promoting best-practice spatial data management, cartography and system performance optimisation.
- Contribute to corporate information systems, cross-team collaboration and the development of GIS standards, architectures, policies and procedures that support safety, compliance, environmental outcomes and long-term digital sustainability.
About you:
- A tertiary qualification in GIS, spatial sciences, information systems or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Demonstrated experience administering and supporting enterprise GIS environments, with strong knowledge of Esri ArcGIS and experience with QGIS and/or open-source GIS tools highly regarded.
-
Advanced Python and SQL capability, utilising AI-assisted development to efficiently deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.
- Experience designing or supporting scalable GIS architectures, including map services, spatial databases and web GIS platforms, with an understanding of performance limits of UI-centric approaches.
- Experience with spatial databases (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server and PostGIS), data modelling and service optimisation.
- A sound understanding of local government operations, systems and information needs, or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritise and manage competing workloads, applying strong analytical and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, reliable GIS services.
- Proven ability to maintain and manage large and complex GIS datasets and mapping outputs to meet Council’s operational, strategic and community needs.
- Strong communication skills, with experience providing GIS advice, training and support to a diverse user base.
- Ability to design and implement effective spatial information solutions, contributing to IT Service Desk operations and supporting related systems where required.
- A collaborative team member who actively engages in continuous professional development and stays current with GIS technologies, architectural patterns and best practice.
